3. People refer to 'Sheffield'. What is it ?
'Sheffield' or more properly 'Old Sheffield Plate' refers to a process devised in the 18th century of silver plating. Please refer to our page describing Old Sheffield. This is not to be confused with sterling silver that is hallmarked in Sheffield.
4. What's the best way to clean silver ?
This is dependent on several factors, the chief of which are:
Location - Items left in direct sunlight will tarnish more readily than those in sheltered areas.
Handling - If pieces are handled regularly, they will not need a thorough clean. A cloth to remove finger marks is more than sufficient.
Age - Modern silver tarnishes quicker than old silver. Antique silver acquires a patina over the course of its lifetime. For pieces with ingrained dirt, liquid polish - such as Silvo or Goddards, applied with cotton wool, and rubbed off with a duster will suffice. For really dirty items, duraglit, if applied delicately, is perfect.
5. What are old plate marks ?
'Old plate marks' generally refers to the process of electroplating throughout the 19th century. Manufacturers placed identifying marks on items they made, which resembled typical hallmarks. This practice was widely abandoned in the 20th century.
6. How accurate is your description 'circa' ?
Circa is accurate to 25 years. The age is determined by the style and quality of the piece.
